Bounty of Hope 2003 Raises $100,000 for Research and Awareness
Milford, CT (November 24, 2003) - On Thursday, November 6,
The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Association (RSDSA) hosted
it's annual Fundraising and Awards dinner at the Union League
Club in New York City. The event raised over $100,000 for
medical research and awareness of reflex sympathetic dystrophy
(RSD).
This year's dinner focused on the pediatric population and
two awardees of the evening were honored in this area. Charles
Berde, MD, PhD, of Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital
of Boston accepted the Scientific Achievement Award for his
achievements in treatment of pediatric RSD and other pain
conditions in children. Ayala Ravek of Ottawa, Canada, a 16-year
old who has had RSD since age 11, was awarded with the Hero
of Hope award for providing a positive role model for other
pediatric RSD patients. Writers of Newsweek magazine were
also recognized and awarded the Awareness in Media Award for
their May 19, 2003 cover story, "Taking a New Look at
Pain."
RSD is also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
and is it is estimated that at least 1.5 million, and possibly
as many as 6 million people in this country alone suffer from
this debilitating syndrome. RSD/CRPS is a chronic, progressive,
disabling neurologic syndrome initiated by bodily trauma.
The condition lacks appropriate general and medical awareness;
to date there is no cure for this condition.
RSDSA is a national not-for-profit organization, headquartered
in Milford, Connecticut, dedicated to medical research and
greater public and professional awareness of RSD. For more
information on RSD and RSDSA please see: www.rsds.org.

Ayala Ravek, Claudia Kalb and Dr. Charles Berde
